A few photos from Reno NV

Main street of Reno, on one side, casinos. On the other, pawnshops... how disgusting

The drive to Reno... if it wasn't for legalised gambling, no one would live in Nevada, and I can see why...

Merry Christmas from Tahoe

This is the view outside my ticket window!!!

My new board (one of left)

The day before christmas, merry christmas everyone on the other side of the world!

We have settled into like in South Lake Tahoe very well. I've been working most days since my last post, and HB started last week and has been nonstop since. Work is real easy, much better then at Priceline! All our managers, supervisors and coworkers are really good to work with and very relaxed - I guess that's because no one is here to earn money (we get paid $2 hour less than a McDonalds employee) but simply to ride so the work atmosphere is very chilled out. I've been working 7:30 - 2:00 lately which is good as it gives me the afternoons up on the mountain as well as my 2 days off a week. Last week I bought a new board, a 167cm Burton Barron with Cartel bindings and some 32 boots and its reeeaaaaalll sweet.

A few nights ago my supervisor threw a keg party at his house. Yes this party was just like one out of American Pie, red plastic tumblers and all. I ended up being the only international there which was wicked as I got to know the real locals around here. I have been sharing Vegimite with all the yanks and not one of them likes it - to be expected! Getting pretty low on my supply soon, have to find a new source of toast spread soon!! Also went and saw Mitch's place last week, complete with hot tub!!! (essential over here!)

I hope everyone has a good christmas and an excellent new year. Our plans are to continue getting as much time up the mountain as possible (in between work, poker games with Peck and Tony, and $1 drink nights at Blu, Vex and Cabo Wabo pubs!)

South Lake Tahoe CA, Stateline and Reno NV

On Tuesday we caught the early train and bus combo to South Lake Tahoe via Sacramento. The town is beautiful - has nothing on Banff with its imposing surrounding mountains but the Lake really is amazing to look at. Supposedly if it was drained it would take over 700 years to refill - its a huge lake! The town is really spread out with little public transport, yanks definately like to use their cars!! Spent our first 3 days looking for housing which was definately the lowpoint of the trip as most of the housing had already been taken. We managed to find an oversized motel room with full size kitchen and bathroom for the 3 of us for a really cheap rate which was great, but I feel sorry for any people arriving now as there is nothing left - not even motel rooms. We have 3 to our room which isn't too bad considering some South African friends at work have 10 people on blow up matresses in a 2 bedroom cabin!

have met some great people here already - locals, americans from interstate, kiwis, south africans, canadians, fellow aussies, heaps of brazilians, argentinians and a few brits make up most of the town.

HB and I had our work orientation on friday which was fine and I started work on Sunday as a ticket seller at one of the California Base Lodges (the ski area spans two states - california and nevada, its huge, at least twice the size of perisher). Its easy work and I have a great group of people to work with. getting up at 6:15am for work is the only pain, but considering I finish work most days at 2:15pm which gives me 2 hours every day to ride the mountain 9and my days off) its a great job. Unfortunately as half the hill isn't open yet HB doesn't start work until the 17th. Tony is spending his days up the mountain or at the casinos (theres 5 of them). I think he is $350 up currently, after a massive $600US win the other week - good way to pay off the trip!

A few nights ago our Brazilian neighbours had a bit of a party and then we all headed out. I definately think the Brazilians are the hardest partiers, have never seen a group of people so energetic at 5am, especially when we all had to be at work by 7:30...

Today (Wednesday) has been my first day off since starting work on sunday and I'm in Reno filling out the last of my paperwork for the US Government. Nevada is the only state in the US that has legalised gambling and it shows, the main street is filled with 10+ casino's and nothing else. If it weren't for the casino's I don't think anyone would live here! This idea has been further reinforced by the lack of scenery once you cross the border from california - there aren't any trees here! just savanna, shrubs and desert! Have seen my first drive through ATM, drive up bank teller windows, and a 24 hour drive thru pharmacy! americans love their cars...

snow is forecast for the next week so hopefully ill get some good riding in soon. thats all on the cards for now! ciao. i hope everyone is enjoying the summer back home, i heard it was melbournes hottest day in 30 years the other day 9and with the fires going on as well!) hope we smash the poms in the next test!

Recap of LA

Greetings from Reno NV, supposedly known as 'the biggest little city in the world'. I'll recap a little from our past week...

Los Angeles
LA was really what we expected it to be. Big, dangerous, souless, crazy - a one of a kind place. We had a look at Santa Monica Beach (which has nothing on Aussie beaches!) and kept a lookout for the Baywatch chicks. There were none to be seen unfortunately. Walked down to Venice Beach which is where the famous boardwalk is, full of crazy roller bladers, buskers, dodgy characters trying to sell you everything from artwork to genuine Egyptian papryus, crazy stalls, vollyballers, homeless people, and local hip hop playa's pleeding with you to listen to their new tune and buy a CD (burnt of course!) as they just signed a recording contract with sony and will be famous in a month! Near this boardwalk is Muscle Beach - a sort of outdoor gym meets beach where all the buff American's work out in front of all the crowds. I resisted the urge to jump on the bench press and show them how an Aussie can lift, instead opting for the $3 hamburger shop down the street. This was my favourite part of LA, really vibrant and well.... distinctively wierd.

HB and I caught a bus into downtown LA (so next time we watch Law and Order we can yell 'been there!!') and onwards to Hollywood Bvd. This is where all those stars are immortalised in the pavement either in big stars or by having conrete moulds done of their hands and feet. Had a peak in the Kodak Theatre where the Oscars are held every year, but considering I think I've only watched them twice it wasn't as amazing experience as it was for the Japanese tourists next to us! Walked onwards to Sunset Bvd where all the famous clubs are (inc. the Viper Room where River Pheonix O.D'ed). Went inside the original (and first) Hustler store started by Lrry Flynt - potentially the only non-dodgy/seedy adult store in the world.

Random LA observations:
Price of one Wendy's BLT burger - $1.07. Price of two large apples - $3.50! However, bananas are at 49c/lb, suckers!!
Squatters and homeless people sleep in hotel and hostel lobbies, kitchens, wherever they can. LA feels very rich, and very poor in places, im glad Australia doesn't have the same range of problems... yet.

We decided after this day in LA that we would rather be in San Francisco having a wild time. So, we hopped aboard the Amtrak train back up to SF and upon entering the dining car said hello to Jose, the same bartender who kept us entertained on our way down to Santa Barbara. This time our wallets were feeling the pinch but we still kept him company for a few hours. Even though the train is more expensive then the bus, and slower, you are always guaranteed to meet some interesting strangers and this time it was an ex-vietnam vet called SJay who gave us plenty of laughs. Upon arriving in SF Tony and I found Sams Hamburgers, an awesome little hamburger shop that had been open for 36 years and was obviously a locals hangout (did feel a bit seedy at first but hey).

On Monday, Tony took HB and I down to the Haight, the birthplace of the 'summer of love' hippy festival in the late 60s. The hippys are still there and its an immensely interesting place to visit. It's right next to Golden Gate Park which is huge, at least 15 times the size of the Domain. Was a funny afternoon, after we encountered these hippys who had 'rescued' a chicken from chinatown and were letting it loose in the park. Shenanigins followed.
